As many know Art is no longer able to keep up with the Turtle Nesting Habitats that the Rocky Mountain Naturalists created many years ago (to prevent turtle mortality crossing Highway 3/95). As a result of last years flooding the main portion has been completely devastated. Greg has been working to remove the reeds that have washed up onto the nesting areas and making access channels through the reeds. The habitat fence is also in poor shape and needs repair and weeds are slowly encroaching. The Nature Trust summer crew have been a great help in placing more sand and cleaning the site.

I saw the opportunity to go out with Greg on the MNR website and thought it sounded like a pretty interesting outing. I had the pleasure of helping with a turtle monitoring day this week and it was an incredible experience. Greg is extremely knowledgeable about the project and I was blown away by how much care and effort is invested by him and other volunteers. The highlight was definitely discovering a nest and seeing the turtle eggs inside! It's clear by how many turtles are using the new nesting sites and the decline in fatalities of turtles crossing the road that this was a much needed project and I have no doubt the turtles are very thankful. I highly recommend others to go check it out and get involved in anyway they can! Comments are closed.
